Launching A Side Hustle: A Day In The Life Of A Woman | Connected Women

Titled “A Day In The Life Of A Woman,” this series celebrates the women in our lives. From the everyday to inspirational, the series aims to highlight women from various fields and share a bit of the diversity we experience every day.

Alisha Sedor is currently the Senior Manager of Customer Experience Quality, Training, and Development at Harry’s and Founder of Poros Consulting and Coaching.

Looking Forward To Work Every Day

“I’m really motivated by variety and novelty, and right now I’m getting that both from my main-hustle at Harry’s and from my side-hustle consulting and coaching with Poros. At Harry’s, things are always changing and growing so every day has something new to tackle. With Poros, each client is unique so I get to explore new challenges and conundrums with my clients.”

Here’s a look at Alisha’s day:

7 AM: Wake up, squeeze in yoga if I woke up before 7am. Meditate. Listen to The Daily Podcast and NPR while I shower, pack lunch, get ready to head out, kiss my husband and the dog good-bye.

8 AM: Hop on the subway to the office (50 minute commute). Check emails for my coaching side hustle, read a book on the ride – usually contemporary fiction to give my brain a break from work.

9 AM: Arrive at the office of the startup that’s my main hustle, Harry’s. Grab coffee and some fruit for breakfast. Catch-up on my inbox, sometimes jump in to the CX stand-up to hear what’s on for the day.

10 AM: Sprint planning session with my team to prioritize all of the projects we’re working on for the next two weeks.

11 AM: Listen in to webinar on upcoming trends in the customer experience training industry for the year.

12 PM: Pop out for a 15-20 minute walk during the lunch hour, wander the streets of SoHo. I usually call the husband to catch up while I walk. Eat lunch at my desk or in a meeting when I get back (I know, terrible habit).

1 PM: Squeeze in some time to “actually work” on things – draft outlines for new projects, review the work of direct reports, send proposals to my director.

2 PM: 1:1 with my direct report to get updates on what he’s working on and provide guidance as appropriate.

3 PM: Brainstorm with my team on how we might execute on a new initiative we’d like to tackle.

4 PM: 1:1 with our director to provide updates on projects I’m working on and stay synced on what the rest of our department is working on.

5 PM: Wrap up any email responses for the day, do professional journaling for 10 minutes.

6 PM: Coaching client meeting for my side hustle – discuss their “sell-plan:” how they’re going to market the skills they gained in their most recent role in interviews for their next position.

7 PM: Wrap up meeting and hop a train home.

8 PM: Do yoga if I overslept and didn’t fit it in before heading to the office. Otherwise, work on content for my Poros blog, catch up on emails, research upcoming networking opportunities.

9 PM: Have dinner and watch an episode of whatever we’re binging right now with my husband (currently revisiting Bryan Fuller’s library – Dead Like Me and Pushing Daises).

10 PM: Get ready for bed – listen to a podcast while I wash my face, brush my teeth, pick out clothes for the next day, make sure I have all of my gadgets charged (fitbit, bluetooth headphones, kindle).

11 PM: Read a chapter of a book to wind down, listen to bedtime meditation and head to sleep.

Right now, the biggest challenge is finding enough hours in the day.

In addition to tackling two careers, I think self-care and personal relationships are so important. I have to purposefully incorporate time with family, friends, and quiet time for myself. I’d kill for a time-tuner necklace a la Hermione Granger!

Online Tools Alisha Can’t Life Without

“I’m a Google loyalist – my life lives in Google Calendar, I sync all of my Google docs across devices, and I utilize Drive to collaborate with teammates in both of my jobs. GSuite is essential to keeping my work, and life, organized.”
