Tell us about you and your business/career, and what you were doing before?
I am a Belgian entrepreneur, an accomplished international marketing strategist, and upcoming author (2016). A diverse yet coherent professional path has flown me across the world and given me a very unique perspective on business and life. My professional experience lies in discovering what is noteworthy, crafting compelling experiences and growing businesses. I have worked with high-end clients and award-winning brands and held various leadership positions in the corporate world across Europe and Asia: from journalist to PR manager to head of marketing for international B2C and B2B brands.
Over a decade of experience in international marketing has given me a holistic understanding of the entire, complex marketing ecosystem. Based on this experience and an irresistible love for cutting edge technologies, I decided to launch mOOnshot digital, a boutique creative agency crafting bespoke digital solutions for premium and luxury brands. I take pride in empowering forward-thinking businesses to realise their full potential through digital innovation.
Our advisory board includes former senior executives of Google, Facebook and YouTube. mOOnshot digital is also the exclusive digital partner of The Luxury Network Singapore, a private, invitation-only, business-to-business club of the world’s premier brands and organisations, including Porsche, FJ Benjamin, Etihad Airways, Small Luxury Hotels of the World and W Singapore Sentosa Cove, to name a few. This strategic partnership bears testament to mOOnshot digital’s unique Digital Craftsmanship approach and our ability to move digital boundaries for discerning brands.
Dreams Unknown
Part of being a successful entrepreneur is being able to recognise the opportunities around you.
I had always dreamed of starting my own business – although I wasn’t quite sure what that would be. It was when I noticed a gap in the market for a boutique agency offering bespoke and targeted digital strategies for high-end niche brands that I decided to leave my corporate job and launch my own boutique agency. I experienced the usual doubts when making such a big decision, and it wasn’t easy to leave the ‘security’ of the corporate world.
To me though, entrepreneurship is essentially about innovative thinking and not just starting a company. You can be entrepreneurial in your corporate role. It is about thinking out of the box and designing creative alternatives that we hope will lead us to something better.
Don’t jump into entrepreneurship if your only reason is to ‘be your own boss’. It isn’t an easy path: it’s bumpy at times and challenging, both physically and emotionally. Think marathon and sprint at the same time. But it’s an amazing journey and the excitement it holds is definitely worth it! You accomplish more than you ever thought possible. Just don’t forget to have fun along the way!
Your Business Is What You Make Of It
Launching my own business has been the most exciting, scary, hard and rewarding rollercoaster ride I have embarked on! It has been filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. Every project, every client, every challenge is different. I love that I can learn new things every day, experiment with new approaches and create new models for success as digital innovation continues to merge with traditional marketing. It is fulfilling to run a business that makes a real difference to our clients, and I enjoy the satisfaction of supporting and accompanying ambitious businesses successfully transform for the digital age.
I am passionate about digital alchemy, and that is what drives me. Digital is about leveraging highly skilled processes to release the internal sparkle of brands to create mesmerising experiences for their discerning audience, and I enjoy shaping and polishing select brands and making them shine online, grow, and capture hearts and minds. The essence of digital to me is not technology: it is the opportunity to connect with people and improve brands and lives at scale. There’s nothing more exciting than that.
What is your biggest challenge/frustration as an entrepreneur or professional?
When you start your own company, suddenly there are all these other things that you need to do besides your core role. On the other hand, you’re learning daily, which is exhilarating.
You also have to be patient and spend a lot of time networking, networking and…networking. Running your own business requires discipline, hard work and self-motivation.
Business Doesn’t Have To Be Lonely
I learned at a very young age not to take life for granted. All the painful experiences gave me the strength and determination to seize my life. I stopped focusing on all the great things that would never be (if only…) and decided to savour the present moment while relentlessly pursuing my dreams.
I decided that business and life did not need to be a lonely road. So, I surrounded myself with amazing people who uplift me; whose presence calls forth my best. I have supportive people in my life and incredible mentors, and I’m really thankful for that.
Often, people think that you have to fight your way to the top. But what really builds an extraordinary career and acts as the ladder to success are all the small kindnesses and moments of positive, personal interactions. It’s the little things that often have the greatest impact. Every day that I bring a positive change to someone’s life or business through a smile, a friendly word, a helping hand, or a successful project, is a happy, fulfilling day for me.
If you could do it all again – what would you do differently?
I get asked this question all the time, and my answer is always the same: I don’t believe in regrets. I am actually grateful for the roadblocks I have been confronted with because they have forced me to be more resilient, and shaped me into the woman I am today.
A piece of advice: when things go wrong, what’s most important is your next step. Learn to regard all the missteps as lessons in disguise and opportunities to learn and grow. It is amazing how positive thinking and self-belief can change outcomes.
Making Your Own Luck In Life
My father passed away when I was young but his wise words still resonate with me today. He taught me the value of hard work, and that kindness is the foundational human quality. One of his favourite sayings that I always keep in my mind, and try live by is, “It’s up to us to create our own luck.” True success is about creating something out of nothing, nurturing it, and making a significant change in people’s lives. Isn’t that how you want to be remembered?
I believe happiness is a choice and the rest is a matter of perspective. Always be the best person you can be. Aspire to great things, but never take anything for granted. Start from nothing and define your own success. So, if I have to share my own personal quote, I would say – Dare, dream and move boundaries. After all, magic is known to happen beyond your comfort zone.
