Why #PledgeForParity Is This Year’s International Women’s Day Theme
Contributed by Gina Romero March 21, 2016
Can you imagine a world where it will still take 117 years to reach gender parity? Wait, what’s ‘parity’? It’s a state of being equal, especially in status and pay. Experts are saying it will take you, as a woman, 117 years before you receive the same pay that your male counterpart has no problem asking for.
Women contribute to every sector of life just as men do, socially, economically, culturally, and politically. Yet, we’re still not seen as equal in many parts of the world. And where advancements have been made, the pace is slowing down significantly, and that is why #PledgeForParity is this year’s International Women’s Day theme.
So what can you do, male or female, how can you contribute to the achievement of gender parity?
- Make a Pledge for Parity
- Help women and girls achieve their ambitions
- Challenge conscious and unconscious bias
- Call for gender-based leadership
- Value everyone’s contributions equally
- Create inclusive, flexible cultures

We recently posted about the annual celebration to be hosted by the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame (SWHF) as they partnered with the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation (SCWO) to host an evening in honour of women who’ve gone above and beyond serving the people of their nation and others!
Several Athena Network members had the privilege of sitting down to the Gala Dinner to witness the induction of this year’s honourees. Not only does Singapore choose to honour women from the past and in the present by inducting them into their Women’s Hall Of Fame, they encourage others to join in the celebration, motivating women and young ladies in their ambition to continue the acceleration of gender parity.
