3 Ways You Can Build A Team That Never Quits!
Contributed by Yana Fry April 26, 2016
One thing I strongly believe in is TEAM. Yup, you only have 24 hours in each day and you can’t do it all yourself. You need to get yourself a team! But you can’t just stick a bunch of people together and hope for magic to happen! You need to know what you’re doing so you can nurture and cultivate a championship team!
Here are three tips that really work:
1. Create A Code Of Honor
One of the major challenges that leaders face when building a team is creating a code of honor that everyone agrees to. There must be a set of rules that require the full team to be bought in. If one or two team members disagree, then it is likely that they will create their own rules that are different from the rest of the team. This will not only cause confusion among team members, but will also create an inconsistent image of the team. As a result, the team will appear as a group of individuals with different behaviors.
For the above-mentioned reasons, it is necessary to define a code of honor and give all team members a chance to adjust. Make necessary changes to it and form a set of standards that everyone agrees to. Before moving further, make sure that everyone accepts and agrees to the new rules.
2. Empower Everyone In The Team
For success, the power of the team must be shared by all of its members. It should be based on the contributions and competence of each and every member of the team. When you empower team members with necessary tools, resources, etc., you are making sure that they are engaged.
Empowering the team members makes them feel part of the leadership. Additionally, it develops confidence and trust among the members.
A thing to note regarding empowerment is that it is not just about making the team members feel good. Empowerment is about making them realize that they are great at what they do and their contribution is vital for achieving the team’s goals. Once they realize this, then encouraging and motivating them becomes a lot easier. Allow team members to discuss different parts of the project, add in suggestions, and make them more interactive by creating a two-way channel of communication.
3. Clarity Is Power
Another challenge when creating a solid team is the clarity of the goals. Most team members aren’t clear about what is expected of them. Many leaders struggle to make clear objectives and goals. It is essential to make a list of goals that are easily understood by all team members. There shouldn’t be any misunderstanding about what is expected from each member of the team and what needs to be accomplished to achieve success.
Make sure that the team fully understands the goals. It is better to sit down with your team members and set goals so that they are not “directionless”. With clear and known goals, team members will know what they need to learn or do to meet the target objective. By making your goals known, you are providing visible directions for achievement.
If you put these three tips in place within your team or organization, you will feel more unity among all members. Remember, a team isn't just a bunch of people placed together. They need to work together, get each other, and support one another to be a real team. And to do that, they need YOU - the leader - to set the right context. Use the tips I've shared above to do just that.
To a more conscious you,
