5 Foods That Reduce Water Retention
Contributed by Su Lee Chong May 19, 2016
Water retention is a common ailment that can occur to anyone and at any time; it can be an uncomfortable issue. However, it can be alleviated by changing to a low-salt diet and eating certain foods that reduce water retention. Here are five foods that do just that:
1. Fruits And Vegetables
Fruit contains water that helps hydrate the body. They are a natural diuretic and increase the body’s fluid-flushing capabilities. Fruit and vegetables that have high water content include watermelon, tomato, lemon, celery and cucumber.
2. Potassium-Rich Food
Potassium is an important electrolyte involved in nerve signaling. Deficiency in potassium causes water retention in the body. Dehydration, excessive exercise, and diarrhea can cause potassium deficiency. Foods that are rich in potassium are bananas, lima beans, plums, almonds, melons and watercress.
3. Herbs And Spices
Some herbs, such as ginger, garlic, and celery seeds can help to reduce water retention. Use as flavour in your cooking. Urva ursi, buchu, horse chestnut and dandelion are also herbs that help to reduce water retention.
4. Omega-6
Omega-6 helps to reduce body swelling associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Examples of oils with omega-6 are safflower oil and soybean oil. Drizzle them on salads or use to stir-fry your vegetables.
5. Vitamin B
Vitamin B complex encourages the body’s tissue to release fluid and reduce water retention. You can get vitamin B from brown rice, red meat, fresh fruit, yogurt and cheese.
Incorporate these foods into your everyday diet to effectively reduce water retention issues.
