5 Tips For Surviving (And Thriving) During The Easter Chocolate Overload
Contributed by Liza Rowan March 27, 2016
Chocolate is good for you if it’s the right quality and in small quantities, but what is a mum to do come Easter? Chocolate is given out everywhere, at every event, it’s around every corner, and eventually it can become a little overwhelming.
How can you get your kiddies to part from their goodies, and keep yourself from indulging in too much?
Yes, chocolate (especially dark) can be good for you. It’s rich in flavonoid antioxidants, which help lower cholesterol, improve blood flow, and reduce inflammation. And then of course there’s the feel-good factor – a little of what you fancy – which helps prevent cravings, and boosts production of serotonin, our feel-good hormone.
However, the Easter Bunny brings way too much into our homes, and it’s not necessarily the better quality type either.
Here are my five tips on how you can deal with the chocolate overload in your home this Easter:
1. Rather than give so much chocolate to your kids, offer non-edible gifts (books, games, toys). Do your friends a favour by offering their kids the same (and them yours). Your kids will still receive plenty!
2. Make a deal with your kids, that they keep only so much of the better quality chocolate; for surrendering the lesser quality stuff, reward them in a fun non-food way e.g. trip to the movies. Please don't donate any cheap candy to charity; no one needs it. Draw pleasure from simply dumping it.
3. Place your Easter Bunny edible gifts in a tight container, out of sight, with a note-to-self that it's for the kids. Agree that they can have a small piece everyday, after a healthy meal.
4. Make sure you receive some great quality chocolate for you – raw chocolates are healthy, delicious, and a little goes a long way.
5. Savour in the peace and quiet of your own home, and feel those endorphins explode!
