Contributed by Tahnya Butterfield March 13, 2018
This Australian food experience designer has been living in Singapore for over a decade and has a dynamic and unique job which allows her to play different roles at once. Chief Experience Officer at NOSHtrekker, Tahnya shares how she organizes her day.
Titled “A Day In The Life Of A Woman,” this series celebrates the women in our lives. From the everyday to inspirational, the series aims to highlight women from various fields and share a bit of the diversity we experience every day.
Tahnya is part gourmand, explorer, sociologist, conductor and cultural connector. She curates all NOSHtrekker experiences and works closely with their hosts, affiliates, and partners to ensure that NOSHtrekkers receive the best in-home dining food experience.
An Australian, she has been a business coach and educator in Singapore for more than 10 years. Over her 25-year career in business consulting, Tahnya has spent over 10,000 hours positioning leaders and teams for success, working with companies from banks to luxury and retail brands, and start-ups.
Below is an idea of how her day goes:
8 – 9 AM: Just back from walking the dogs. I quickly read the newspaper and drink something green. My children get in the car and the engine starts running; it’s a sign to hurry up. I give them a lift to school, and once back home, take a shower and think about the day.
9:30 – 10 AM: My company, NOSHtrekker, is hosting a brunch event. I am at the venue early to give a corporate client a tour of the property. He is considering using it for a visiting contingent and I am delighted that the home in Telok Kurau is beautifully decorated.
10 AM – 11:30 AM: The event is called #eatmywords where we cook the food in fiction and non-fiction books. Today we are featuring Laina Greene, co-founder of Angels of Impact and co-author of Sustainable Impact: How Women Are Key to Ending Poverty, a primer in sustainable enterprise and its ability to empower women who are in need.
11:30 AM–1 PM: The feeding of our minds is followed by a delicious brunch prepared by our host, Rita of Soulful Grains. The homemade sourdough bread made with turmeric and curry leaves is delicious.
1:30 – 2:30 PM: A brief respite back home. My co-founder Sarah and I review the staging elements for a tradeshow we are exhibiting at in Moscow in March.
2:30 – 5 PM: Sarah and I head out to the headquarters of Epigram Books, who we are working with this year, to learn more about upcoming releases and meet some of the authors. So many interesting books, so many interesting characters – both in the books and the authors themselves.
5:30 – 7:30 PM: I walk the dogs feeling happy as I think about the day. Along the way, I pick blue pea flowers to colour the rice for dinner. While the food is cooking, I hang out with my sons and ask questions about their day. We eat as a family.
7:30 – 9:30 PM: I’m responding to emails, WhatsApp and responding to outdated actions like the RedMart grocery list. I squeeze in conversation with the husband and probably send him messages on WhatsApp too!
10 – 11 PM: Netflix on my phone. This is such a bad habit.
A Thirst For Authentic Travel Experience
Tahnya says that she found NOSHTrekker three years ago because she realized that people want to meet and learn from locals in the first place when they travel. Thus, she found a convenient way of giving them the experience through her enterprise.
She explains she herself wants to meet locals when she travels. She recalls some of her most wonderful experiences all over the world include meeting hawkers of culture, translators of topography, trivia experts, social anthropologists, insightful veterans, and knowledgeable newcomers.
