A Day In The Life Of A Music Entrepreneur

She’s a music entrepreneur and runs schools in Singapore and Malaysia while juggling her family, an MBA, and community volunteering.

Titled “A Day In The Life Of A Woman,” this series celebrates the women in our lives. From the everyday to inspirational, the series aims to highlight women from various fields and share a bit of the diversity we experience every day.

With a full schedule, Wang Eigene works hard on Little Musician Pte Ltd and Little Musician (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, set up in 2015 to meet the needs of young children learning music in a fun and creative environment.

Wang is sharing her busy day to inspire others that hard work is absolutely worth it.

7 AM: I wake up early. One of the first things I do in the morning is meditate. I’m a Christian and I believe in meditating on Bible verses and aligning myself to them. It sets the tone for the day and prepares my heart for challenges that come ahead. I know I can face each day bravely because the Lord is with me. I then prepare breakfast for my family.

8 AM: I love dogs, and one of the ways I get to spend time with them is by walking them around the neighbourhood.

9 AM: Start with my work by checking basecamp and emails.

10 AM: Meet with my staff in Singapore. Often, I take time to do one-on-one sessions to hear my team members’ feedback and learn what we are good at and what we can improve on. I also go down to the grounds and teach in their classes to better understand the struggles my teachers are facing.

Similarly, during these sharing sessions, they get to step into my world, to see the needs required of running both companies in Singapore and Malaysia. Team members from these two countries meet often physically and virtually to brainstorm and discuss ideas. They are closely knitted because of the online platforms we are using to run this global company.

11 AM: Proceed to meeting with my staff in Malaysia.

At Little Musician, I hire graduates below 28 years old with a minimum GPA of 3.6. I believe in having fresh blood who bring new ideas to the team. Most of my team members and interns are diligent, independent, and creative. They know very well that this is a different kind of music school, and we are shaping the minds of our little ones one at a time.

12 PM: Have lunch, followed by an afternoon walk with the dog around the neighbourhood. (Yes, I really love my dog!)

1 PM: Review lesson plans for the day.

2 -6 PM: Head to various schools for music teaching class.

6 PM: Head home followed by evening walk with the dog around the neighbourhood. I have a retired K9 narcotics dog named Shaggy, living with me.  He eats thrice a day and walks at least thrice a day too! He is aging, so more care and concern needs to be extended to him.

I’m constantly keeping to my schedule as much as possible so that those lunch and dinner times for Shaggy would not be missed. Sometimes though, I get worried that my meetings might go on overtime and I won’t have time to walk Shaggy. On these instances, I would ring my father up and he would help me do the noontime walk feeding. It’s a blessing!

7 PM: Prepare dinner for the family and wind down over wine and cheese.

8 PM: I attend to community events.

9 PM: Reading and completing MBA assignments

10 -11 PM: Hubby sleeps and I continue to clear my work before the next day begins.

Online Tools Wang Can’t Live Without

Believe it or not, we use several online tools on a daily basis. However, the most effective would be Basecamp and Smartsheets.

Basecamp helps us gather work discussions and the To-Do’s can be checked off upon completion. I also get to ask questions such as:

What music are you listening to?
What inspired you this week?
What achievements are you proud of this month?

My team members can upload videos, photos and a little story about themselves to share with their coworkers.

For Smartsheets, we get to upload soft copies of our invoices and payment receipts by schools, suppliers and vendors, and this helps to consolidate the work we have in a table form.

Wang’s Love For Music

I’ve always loved music since I was young. In fact, “Little Musician” was my nickname in school.

I’ve taught music for 16 years and have met with learners from 18 months to 65 years old.

One of the most memorable moments of my career was teaching at the Singapore Boys’ Home where I saw how music helped to manage anger, stress and violence in juvenile delinquents. From there, I decided to scale down to conducting music classes for young children between ages two to six at childcare centres. Being there with these children, I learned effective classroom management skills which are paramount to teaching music in a classroom setting.

I’m constantly inspired by my children and my goal is to be their first music teacher and empower them to succeed through music learning.
