A Day in the Life of a Woman Freelance Writer

As a freelancer, she started out on Elance as a virtual assistant and gradually made the change to become a writer while living in England. What’s a day like for a freelance writer?

Titled “A Day In The Life Of A Woman,” this series celebrates the women in our lives. From the everyday to inspirational, the series aims to highlight women from various fields and share a bit of the diversity we experience every day.

My freelance writing journey started in the year 2010, while living in the UK. I started out on the Elance freelancer platform. It gave freelancers the chance to offer their services online by working from home however, it’s no longer available. I also freelanced on People Per Hour, another freelancer website.

As a freelance writer, this is what my day looks like:

5 AM: I like to call myself the ‘Early Bird’, you know what they say about the early bird; it catches the worm. I like working at this time of the morning, it helps me get a fresh start to my work day. I use this extra time for research, planning and organising my work.

7 AM: At this time I would be writing an article, book review or doing an administrative task, this will depend on the type of client I’m working for. Time management is highly important here, being able to complete your work on time will prove to your clients that you are efficient and a true professional.

9 AM: Breakfast Break

11 AM: It is best to prioritize your work and stick with the facts, by doing this, it will be easier for you to organise your tasks and you will be better able to meet the client’s needs or requirements.

1 PM: Lunch Break

2 PM: During this time I will finish up my tasks for that day and then evaluate or review my completed assignments just to ensure that I did what was required or to see if I achieved my goal or aim.

5 PM: Dinner is prepared me or by other family members, I was born in Jamaica, so my favourite food is Jamaican, Indian or Chinese. I also enjoy eating rice, peas and chicken, curry goat, a variety of seafood and drinking natural juices.

7 – 10 PM: I’m naturally an outdoors type of person, so I enjoy nature walks, going to the beach, going on road trips – I truly love adventurous activities. I also write inspirational poetry in my spare time. I enjoy spending quality time with my friends or family.

I’m off to bed around 10 – 11 PM

Then I start another day. I wake around 4 AM, take my shower, get ready and repeat.

My freelancer journey started in the year 2010, on the Elance freelancer website or platform. I worked mostly on Elance as a virtual assistant; I had previously worked in an administrative role for over 5 years, having acquired knowledge of Ms Word and Ms Excel it was easy for me to work as an online freelancer, for example in areas of data gathering and entry, web research, fact checking, report writing and other administrative duties. In 2013 I decided to do a freelance journalism course at the Writers Bureau College of Journalism in Manchester, England, this course is a distance learning course, and it’s done online. My study module includes mostly learning how to write articles, essays, book reviews, query letters and reader’s letters.

My writing interest includes articles relating to health, business, information technology, women’s interest, philosophy, inspirational and religious views and other topics which stimulate my interest. I’m hard – working and very dedicated in regards to producing work of a high standard.
