Formula 1 Inspired Nutrition Tips To Keep Your Health On Track
Contributed by Liza Rowan September 9, 2015
As F1 season comes around again here in Singapore, we’re bracing ourselves for the usual high-octane experience both on and off the track. I’m all for good, or rather great, Singapore Grand Prix parties (it’s in my 100% Irish genes) – but as always, balance is key so that we get to complete the race, making it to the finish line with some juice to spare.
Here is my nutritional equivalent to the 107% F1 rules, to get you on the right track.
Start the day with a nourishing breakfast. Having no fuel in the tank is never a good idea.
Give yourself that jump start by consuming complex carbs, protein, without added unhealthy fats or sugars. Some examples are:
- scrambled eggs on wholegrain toast
- healthy granola with Greek yogurt
- buckwheat pancakes with fruit and Greek yogurt
- whole grain toast with egg and avocado
Keep hydrated. Substitute sugary drinks with plain H20, and keep a bottle to hand throughout the day. If you’re consuming alcohol, pace yourself to avoid any stagger or worse, early self-disqualification.
Although the races are in the evenings, the parties can go all day long – pull on the breaks once in a while, take time out from the heat to prevent burn out. Unlike with F1, no one’s checking your Delta time, so no need to accelerate back to the circuit.
Find time to run or walk a few laps daily over the weekend – there are so many benefits from exercise, having the Buttons and Hamiltons of this world is no reason to stop.
Exercise is also the best way to rev up those engines, and of course look after you own body work.
Make your Pit Stops healthy ones – there’s always a lot of unhealthy fare at such events, but if you want to stay in Pole Position, you’ll find nutritious items, too.
Easier said than done, but get some quality rest in between circuits. We need our 7-8 hours of sleep to recuperate and avoid burnout. Listen to your body, don’t over-steer, or stay in overdrive, or you may not see the finish line.
Hope these tips help you get off to a rolling start, keeping you well-fuelled as you enjoy the thrills of Formula 1! More tips? Check out how you can engineer your health like the world’s fastst car!
