How I Lost Weight Through Healthy Eating And Only Moderate Exercise – Twice

I’ve always been interested in a healthy lifestyle though my route to it for a long time was through sports. It always makes me feel good, and any worries seem so much smaller after a run in the woods.

In my late teenage years and in my twenties, my healthy eating concept consisted of what was commonly considered healthy then: low fat and lots of salad. I was kind of ignoring the fact that this kind of diet does not really satisfy for a long time, and as a result I was filling in with a lot of empty carbs and sugars. Being a busy, urban couple without kids at the time, we’d seldom cook proper dinner during the week – though we’d eat lunch at work every day, and would never leave the house without a brekkie.

Tiny Bundle With Big Changes

Life changed a fair bit when our first daughter was born. We became much more home-centric. Soon after, we moved to Singapore and despite some initial hesitance, hired a wonderful helper who still lives and works with us. All of a sudden, we were enjoying home cooked meals – every day. During both of my pregnancies, I gained more than 20kg weight, however after each one I lost more than that and I believe I’m now in my ideal adult weight. In my late thirties – and as busy mother and an entrepreneur.

How Did I Do It?

How was that possible? Eating proper dinner, lunch and having a healthy snack in between. Not necessarily doing any super heavy exercise, but doing a bit every day. Walking kids to school, taking a little walk during lunch time. Being active.

I honestly believe keeping yourself well-nourished is the best way to lose weight, and stay in your ideal weight zone. Whole grains, a bunch of veggies (not just salad) together with a healthy dose of proteins and good fats keep you energised – and going. There’s no need to resort to sweet and fatty snacks, when you plan your meals ahead and stick to regular meal times, including healthy snacks.

Nonetheless, I do enjoy some treats, too - dark chocolate with some almonds and walnuts on most nights (after kids have gone to bed). A piece of cake here and there. And I do that with good conscience. If you nourish yourself well most of the time, it does not really matter what you eat every now and then.

Anyway, our bodies tell us what we need – however, we should not be tricked by sugar cravings, which are a borderline addiction.

Tips For Losing Baby Weight

  • Naturally sweet treats like fruit or honey are far less addictive and come packed with a bunch of vitamins and fibre.
  • Never go near a grocery store when hungry.
  • If you must shop immediately before a mealtime, pack a healthy snack and have that before you go shopping. This will keep you away from the snack aisle. Given the detrimental effects of land clearing for palm oil production, it’s much better to avoid these processed ‘goodies’ anyway as most of them would contain palm oil.
  • Consider baking your own sweet treats – it’s a wonderful way to get kids into the kitchen and a true family bonding opportunity. Plus, you know exactly what you’re eating.
