How To Successfully Network With People You Meet!

This week we discuss networking – another key component of my “People Power” system.

Now, I don’t think networking is a brand-new concept to most people, but in my experience, few know how to do it well.

In this article, I explain what networking REALLY is and how you do it well.

Let’s get started …

In the business world, having the right contacts is just as important as having a great product and/or service.Networking can really help. But then again, you don’t just ambush people at their garage and call them friends.

Business events are usually the best approach but even then, networking requires a delicate touch and the following steps should really help you out.

1. Do Your Homework

Effective preparation is half the job. You have to conduct a background assessment of all potentially need-to-know information.

For instance, you have to know when and where the event will be, who the event organizers are, what the event is for, who will be in attendance, and whether or not you need to have an official invitation, among other things. This makes you prepared for what might come and keeps you knowledgeable about your situation and what you want out of the whole event.

2. Devise A Strategy

Your strategy has to be based on your purpose for attendance. Having a strategy makes sure that you are goal oriented once you attend the event. Are you after quantity, quality, partners, prospects, investors, etc.?

3. Build Connections

Building connections is not about exchanging names and business cards. It is about paying attention to people. Be attentive to what people say and ask insightful questions. This way you can guarantee that you will be noticed without putting a sign on your forehead that says “I’m needy, please make a connection with me!”

4. Take Note Of People

The biggest mistake people make is disregarding others. Do not be picky. Pay attention to everyone you speak to and keep track of their contact information. You never know when you might need their services.

5. Add Value

Networking is meant to help you out. However, you can't expect to have a one-sided relationship with yourself as the sole beneficiary. You have to be ready to help people out even though they might not help you. If you add value to someone's business however, they tend to "owe you a favour" as the cliché goes and soon enough, you get to collect.

6. Tell People Your Value

Starting with an introduction is often a great way to chase people off. However, after you have established an understanding, you can then tell them about your business value. This is where you explain your business. However, you should keep the sales pitch short, precise and interesting.

7. Following Up And Following Through

Networking doesn't end at the event. After the event, maintain contact with your network. Every once in a while do something for your network to make sure you aren't forgotten. Most importantly, get a second date, this time with less of a crowd and much more detail oriented.

And there you have it, 7 VERY solid tips you can use to get the most out of the networking process.

Use these "People Power" skills and start making connections.

Tell me how it all goes!

To YOUR success,

Yana
