#ConnectedWomen Regina Soh, Community Leader At Essential Oil Revolution
Contributed by Regina Soh December 21, 2017
She once helped companies achieve better business results and performance by engaging their employees but has since been moved to help people on a much more personal level with natural products.
As women continue to be a driving force for change around the world, this series aims to highlight those who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to creating an impact.
Regina Soh was the Founder of Invipulse two years ago when we last interviewed her, since then so much has changed! After her dad saw such great results with the world’s first medicines (keep reading for those specifics), Regina was moved to make a change not only in her own life but to continually take leaps out of her own comfort zone to help those around her.
Today she’s sharing about the lessons learned along the way, and how to get your business idea right before making the mistakes she did.
From Tech To Gifts From The Earth
I am an Essential Oils Specialist where part of my work is to share and spread the goodness of essential oils to as many people as possible so that they know that there is truly a natural solution to help them with their health and life’s challenge.
Many of us are still dependent on laboratory-made medication which have been proven to produce side effects over and over again. I find a very strong calling for me to educate as many as possible about natural solutions which are presented in the form of essential oils – aka gifts from the Earth.
Prior to stepping into this path, my profession was a SAP consultant. Because essential oils have helped my dad, who is a diabetic, reduced his blood sugar level reading from an average of 9 down to 6.5 all in 6 months’ time, I believed in the power of essential oils which triggered me to start the essential oil business.
Helping Others Makes Business Worth The Effort
The road to building your own business is never an easy route. Lots of time and work involved. There are times when I really feel like just going back to my comfort zone of being a SAP consultant because it’s so much easier.
Thankfully, because there is so much joy in helping people alleviate or improve some of the health challenges, I find meaning and purpose in what I do and that’s what kept me going.
To someone trying to seek alternatives, no matter if it’s career or entrepreneurship, having a purpose behind what you do is very important and don’t undermine it. It may sound cliché but that’s how humans function and what we thrive on – purpose!
Not Always A Dream Come True
I am an introvert and going for networking sessions, meeting people one-on-one, doing public talks drains a lot of energy out of me. I had to expend more effort in bringing out the extroverted me.
I knew I couldn’t drain myself every day and so, I’ve learned to manage my schedule in such a way where I still get quality time for myself to recharge, and then continue doing the things which I find enriching.
The key is to find a sweet spot where you find time to balance play and work.
Work is never-ending. It is ok to take a break because then that’s the only way you can go further. If you’re stuck and think of quitting, go away alone to somewhere and just have time to think through things. You get another perspective when the environment is different.
Challenges Of Work
There is a high level of scepticism for MLMs and most people would shun us. The only workaround through this is to use my actions to show them that I am not just someone selling something. I am their friend and, so I listen first to their needs above making transactions.
In other words, I provide value and benefits in comparison to purely just-for-business agenda.
Lessons Learned In Failure
My biggest failure was trying to start ventures just because I thought it would be the next lucrative thing to do. I did not validate if there was a market for it or whether the business would be feasible as a one-man show.
I’ve learnt that besides validating if there is a market demand, you must also review if it’s a business where you can consistently put in effort over a long period of time.
While doing business, both foreground and background preparation takes a lot of effort and time. If you’re not committed enough, you will be drained out in no time and then the next easiest option is to give up which then brings you back to status quo.
Riding on pure passion is not enough.
Doing It Differently
I would first learn how to best collaborate with other people such that we leverage each other’s expertise to achieve more and provide more value. When I first started out, I did everything myself, thinking it would be more effective this way as it’s just me that I need to be accountable to.
But I soon came to realize that relationship-building is very important when doing business.
One of the best business deals to have is through word of mouth. It’s easier to close deals through recommendations and these business referrals are only possible when you have built strong relationships with as many people as possible.
Never try, never know. Nobody knows for sure how things will turn out, so just do what you have to do, even if it is a small step.
