Why There Is Prosperity In Decluttering

It’s that time of the year when the Chinese clean and clear their homes to sweep away the bad luck of the past year in order to usher in good luck. Decluttering a house is an important part of their tradition.

Though I’m not Chinese, I do adhere to the fact that decluttering brings prosperity. This is why.

Clutter often leads you to buy multiples of the same item because you can’t remember you have them or can’t find them when you need them. Corkscrews, staplers, gift wrapping paper are just a few of the most popular items I find in my clients’ homes in large numbers but it may well be plasters or tomato sauce in your home.

Whatever it is, this is money that could have been saved from being spent. Add to that cheques that haven’t been banked in on time or vouchers that haven’t been redeemed on time. It can easily add up to several hundred dollars.

But there is also money to be made after decluttering if you decide to sell your pre-loved stuff. Options are plenty.

You can organise a garage sale or sell online through Facebook groups or platforms such as Craigslist or Carousell. Or you can try second-hand dealers. Some have a physical shop such as Cash Converters, while others operate through the internet. Some are generalists but some are specialised – Style Tribute, for example, focuses on designer clothes and accessories.

With all that’s said, it can be highly rewarding to give your stuff a second life by giving it away to family and friends or donating it to charities. Check this post if you are interested in more disposal options1.

I know it’s not easy to let go of your stuff, I regularly witness it with my clients and I sometimes experience it myself, trust me! I bet it has to do with the fear that you might need it in the future, or with the value, either sentimental or financial, you associate with it. But the thing is, when your stuff takes control over your life, when it weighs you down, when it makes you feel paralysed to move on with your life, isn’t it time really to let go of your past and of some hopes for your future so you can embrace your present

Feeling lighter, in control, less stressed, less frustrated, with a clear and calm mind are the words my clients use to describe how they feel after our decluttering sessions. After all, beyond the wealth, isn’t the impact on our well-being priceless?

I hope you’ve found here the motivation to declutter, if you needed the boost.

Chinese New Year is a wonderful time to get the ritual started but trust me, there is really no right time to start. The most important is just to start!

Start with whatever time you have, even ten minutes a day will make a difference. Break projects into manageable parts. If you want to declutter your home, start with one room. `If it’s the kitchen, begin with the pantry, etc. And don’t move onto the next area until you are done with the first one. Good luck!
