Contributed by Liza Rowan April 15, 2017
We focus the spotlight on Liza Rowan — from a corporate high-flyer to holistic nutritionist, Liza shares how her passion for health and fitness brought out the best in her through Health & Vitality Pte Ltd.
As women continue to be a driving force for change around the world, this series aims to highlight those who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to creating an impact.
In this exclusive interview, Connected Women caught up with Liza Rowan, a Holistic Nutritionist with a passion for helping expats, their family and helpers live more energetic lives through the power of healthy alternatives.
Before you began your business today, what were you doing?
I spent 15 years as part of start-up teams setting up new companies, but always for Corporate – so I spent my fair share of time on planes, hotels and meeting rooms! I have a degree and MSc in business and focused on Supply Chain and Logistics in the Electronics Industry.
Transitioning From Corporate To Self-Employed
I’ve always had a passion for health and fitness. When my kids were born, I took a career break and retrained as a Holistic Nutritionist in Toronto. They say ‘find a job you love and you never do a day’s work’, which is so true in my case. As I was now following my passion, investing hours in the subject that I love, things just seemed to flow; although it’s easy to say that in hindsight.
When we moved to Singapore, people were very interested to know more about health and nutrition, so I set up “Health & Vitality Pte Ltd” with the intent of educating, motivating and inspiring people to take control of their own health. I truly believe that our health is the foundation of our happiness and that we can never take it for granted.
Favourite Aspects Of Running A Business
Through group Nutrition courses I offer, I meet so many amazing people from all walks of life, who all have an interesting story to tell.
My business supports a kids’ charity in Phnom Penh, and my ultimate goal is to build awareness and a connection between individuals and corporates with NGOs. I am amazed at how open and willing people are to assist – often, they are just looking for the opportunity to give back, but life gets in the way.
And The Nitty Gritty
This is actually a difficult question to find an answer for – possibly the fact that running a business is full on, and I need to cover so many facets – admin, marketing, sales, website, financials and so on. That said, I’ve learned so much by having to get involved in all these areas.
Now I realise that I don’t need to do it all alone; there are many talented people out there from whom I can hire the skills, while they also add great value by way of advice and strategies I may not have thought of.
If You’re Thinking Of Starting Your Own Business
Do not underestimate what you can do – embrace the opportunity, and if you don’t succeed 100%, that’s okay – look how you’ve stretched yourself in the process, and what you’ve learned.
I had a huge fear of public speaking but knew it was something I had to overcome as I wanted to connect with more people. Now, I love the challenge of speaking to groups, presenting to corporate, or doing a live TV show.
So now, to my surprise, I will jump at the challenge to present, rather than shy away from what could turn out to be a golden opportunity.
Bring Value To Clients
I always solicit written evaluation and feedback, which of course are great as testimonials. With my corporate experience, I focus on goal- setting and reviewing progress week to week, so that good, life-long habits are formed.
Anyone can acquire nutrition knowledge (although one may need to sift through all the crazy fads and diets), but the ultimate goal is to make change. Some quotes from clients are ‘fabulous, informative – already having an impact on my life’, ‘so inspiring, the course opened my eyes’.
As part of our “Vitality”, I coach about finding our true passion in life, and practicing both good attitude and gratitude.
I recently met with a client who took the course almost two years ago. She was in between jobs as Director of Finance, so tagged along with a friend, having given little consideration to good nutrition in the past.
She is now so inspirational in that she truly has taken control of her health – she has lost 12 kg and is studying nutrition part time. She is also considering giving up her high paying corporate job to set up business in some area of holistic health. She admits she is so happy and excited about her future, and confident that she will be running a successful business in a few years time.
Good nutrition isn’t just about being slim or healthy. It’s about having more energy,
feeling less stressed, being more confident and reaching our optimum vitality.
We are the leaders, activists, innovators, and visionaries – whether in the public eye or behind the scenes
– who are revolutionising the way people think and live. We are #ConnectedWomen.
