To Detox Or Not To Detox? 6 Foods To Avoid If You’re Not Into Detoxing

Dieting and detoxing seem to be constant hot topics in the press these days. Everyone wants to know how a celebrity has magically shed so much weight or why everyone is drinking green juices all of a sudden.
Detoxing can take many forms and so it is important to note that we’re not looking here at some fancy new product that is going to change your world. Instead, let’s take a look at an example of preventative detox advice; quite simply, what foods to avoid if you want to stay healthy.
Sugar
Oh so sweet, oh so naughty. Excess sugar consumption can lead to a wide range of health issues, from hypoglycaemia and diabetes to high blood pressure and depression, and even acne. This self-sustaining additive induces cravings, exasperating the problem. Got a sweet tooth? Go au natural with honey and stevia.
Gluten/Wheat
Gluten reduces nutrient absorption within the digestive system and increases toxin build up. Wheat is reported to disrupt the body’s endocrine system and has been linked to diabetes and obesity, as well as mental health problems. Try swapping typical pastas, breads and cereals for ones containing gluten-free whole grains, such as brown rice or quinoa.
Dairy Products
The human body supposedly hasn’t evolved to the point where adults are able to digest dairy properly; in addition, these are thought to contribute to mucus formation and enhance toxin retention. Cheese cravings? Swap to organic goat’s cheese.
Alcohol
Probably an obvious one but most people will have, at some point after a big night, declared that they are going on a detox. Did you know that the sugar that alcohol contains naturally binds to toxins, easing them into the body?
Fried Foods
Avoid. Simple. Hydrogenated oils, margarines and trans fats all have a melting point higher than core body temperature and breaking them down puts undue stress on the body. Once they do break down, they lead to clogged arteries and work to accumulate toxins. Replace the unhealthy fats with coconut and avocado oil.
Processed Foods
Not to say all packaged foods are bad, but keep an eye out for chemical ingredients and genetically modified ingredients. Your safest bet is to cook from scratch; you’ll know what you’re eating and chances are you’ll enjoy it more.
In reality, there is no way to avoid bringing harmful compounds into your body, but with a bit of care and a few changes it is possible to manage certain aspects to give yourself a fighting chance.
