Why Everyone Needs A Coach – And 5 Tips For How To Choose One!

I am a coach, and I have a coach.

Actually, I have two.

Every two weeks, I get on Skype and talk things through with my coaches, discussing challenges, processing fears, aligning my goals with passions, celebrating wins, unleashing more of my gifts and abilities … and more.

Maybe you’re thinking – “Why, Yana? Aren’t things going well already? Why do you need a coach?”

Here’s my answer – and it’s the same answer all winners have.

I get a coach BECAUSE things are going well.

And things are going well BECAUSE I have a coach.

Re-read that if you need to … but once you get it, you would have discovered the BIG secret all elite players and top winners know.

Let me break it down for you: when things are going well, you want a coach by your side because you want to keep going forward, growing and becoming more.

And it is not just my opinion – it is a common practice that is adopted by successful people around the world: athletes, business gurus, artists, politicians, stars.

Tony Robbins, has five coaches. That’s right … FIVE.

So why does having a coach matter? Here are five reasons why:

A Coach Makes You Keep Your Own Word That You Daily Give To Yourself

Unless you are blessed with biblical self-discipline and you can wake up at 6 am to start your day with a workout, eat right and on time, do your work in the most productive way, pursue your passion and rest well … a coach will kick your butt and ensure you do just that. Basically, a coach makes sure you are staying accountable to yourself and do what you said you would be doing, with no excuses, justifications and/or blame. You will have results.

A Coach Notices Your Blind Spots

Maybe you think everything in your life is going well. But an experienced eye can quickly spot where you’re headed wrong and point it out before you slam straight into a brick wall. Think about driving your favorite Formula 1 car and going 200km/hour – wouldn’t you want to know your blind spots?

Very useful in business.

A Coach Keeps Your Standards High

Standards are the reason why winners do well. They refuse to play below what they are capable of … but we all have those days when we might let something slip, just because. A coach calls it out, and holds us to the highest standard, allowing us to always play at potential. Sometimes, all it takes to succeed is having one person who believes in you.

A Coach Ensures You Are Consistent

Consistency is another factor I notice that is severely lacking among success-seekers. It’s easy to work when motivation is high and you’re feeling in the mood. But what happens when you’re not in the mood?

A coach makes you put in the week still, because every day’s work brings you closer to your goal. And putting in the work when you don’t feel like it builds self-esteem and self-discipline like you cannot imagine. Success is a road made out of many consistent steps.

A Coach Sees You Greater Than You Are

Even the best of us encounter moments of self-doubt. “Can I do it?” … “Am I good enough?”

A coach sees our potential and makes sure we see the same. They squash self-doubt and make us focus on the task at hand – doing whatever it takes to get there. Their belief in us makes us believe in ourselves at times when we need it the most. Why? Because you are more than you think you are!

Put all of these together, and you start to understand why I say things go well BECAUSE I have a coach.

The honest truth is that, at the end of the day, if you wish to play at the highest level, you need to get a coach that will make your business their business.

Someone who will ensure that you show up, day in, day out and do the work.

I have such people, and I recommend you find one, too.

Now, here are five tips for finding a superb coach who is the right fit for you:

1. Never Trust An Overweight Gym Trainer

Choose a coach who can do for you what they have done for themselves. If they can't get fit, rich or whatever they claim to be able to do for you ... run immediately. Basically, look for the person who walks the talk.

2. Diversity Of Experience

On top of a track record, you want a coach who has preferably worked with a huge sample of people. This way, they have more perspective to call on when helping you. Diversity is power.

3. Personal Chemistry

You have to like your coach. It is as simple as that. In a coaching session, 50% of success depends on the rapport between yourself and your coach. Listen to your heart and decide if your coach is right for you.

4. Social Listening

As a famous saying goes “You are what Google says you are”. Go online and see what your potential coach is saying and doing. What you're looking for is integrity.

5. Similar Values

Choose a coach who has similar life/business values to yours. If all you want is to make lots of money, look for the coach who is obsessed with the idea of financial wealth. If you want to make a difference, look for the coach who is passionate about changing lives. If you want to have both - look for the coach who has both. Similar values equal a stronger connection and more results.

Put these tips to use when selecting a coach, and I'm confident you'll find the right coach for you.

Remember, don't try to do it all by yourself.

No one tries to climb Mt Everest without a Sherpa.

Till next time,
